Summer Musical Camp has two primary objectives. First, we will provide a fun, musically sound, and exciting musical theatre experience for students as they are led through ten days of rehearsal enroute to staging and performing a Broadway Jr. Musical.  Secondly, we seek to build practical performance and audition skills that students can take with them to future theatrical endeavors. Student interns will assist the Director and EMA staff in this endeavor.

job descriptions

 Song Leader

June 4-8, June 11-15, 10am-2pm
This position is aimed at working individually with each student in the camp to identify vocal strengths and weaknesses and work to build confidence and vocal independence. This instructional leader will assist campers in the selection of 1-2 Broadway songs that can be used in future auditions/performances beyond the weeks of camp. The intern will provide focused vocal coaching using these pieces, make photo copies for the student to carry with them at the end of camp, and will coach students on how to perform a song for a musical theater audition. This will include coaching on the staging/blocking of an audition song. Additionally, this position may include the rehearsing/coaching of camp specific songs as assigned by the director. The student will report to Mr. Jensen and will undertake other camp responsibilities if assigned.

Monologue Leader

June 4-8, June 11-15, 10am-2pm
This position is aimed at working individually with each student in the camp to identify student acting strengths and weaknesses and work to build confidence as stage performers. This instructional leader will assist campers in the selection of 1 monologue (comedic or dramatic) that can be used in future auditions/performances beyond the weeks of camp. Most students at the middle school level have never selected or performed a monologue, so this instruction will include basic direction on introduction, delivery, character interpretation, projection, physical interpretation, etc. The intern will make photo copies for the student to carry with them at the end of camp, and will coach students on how to perform this monologue for a musical theater audition. This student will need to bring books, anthologies, or internet resources for as many as 50+ quality monologues to use with the students. The same monologue may be used for multiple students, but the research and prep of these pieces by the intern is a vital part of the job. Additionally, this position may include the rehearsing/coaching of camp specific songs or scenes as assigned by the director. The student will report to Mr. Jensen and will undertake other camp responsibilities if assigned.

Team Building Leader

June 4-8, June 11-15, 10am-2pm
This position is aimed at building community and working with groups of students in the camp to engage them in activities when they are not called for a specific period of the rehearsal process. This position will require a thorough knowledge of theater/acting games, "summer camp" activities, show specific character analysis and creative movement practices, and generally build a sense of community among the campers. One of the most challenging aspects of any production is waiting for your scenes to be rehearsed, and this position is aimed at engaging students in these instances with targeted, pre-planned, and varied activities throughout the two weeks. Additionally, this position will be responsible for engaging all the students in the care and maintenance of the rooms we use during the rehearsal day and may include the rehearsing/coaching of camp specific songs and scenes as assigned by the director. The student will report to Mr. Jensen and will undertake other camp responsibilities if assigned.
