 Come grow with us! The McHenry County Youth Orchestra will be celebrating it's 40th anniversary season. Students learn all about music, hone their technique on their instrument and in ensemble playing as well as develop lasting friendships through rehearsals, concerts and special events.

Prelude Orchestra
Jillian Forbes - Conductor
Rehearsals: Mondays, 6:00-7:15pm
Tuition: $475

Members are primarily in grades 3 – 6. Prelude Orchestra is for young string players, who have had a basic introduction to music reading.

Audition Information

Prelude requirements are:

  • One solo piece from Suzuki Book 2 or above (equivalent non-Suzuki repertoire also acceptable)
  • One octave G Major and D Major scales
  • Potential sight reading


Intermezzo Orchestra
Andy Malovance - Conductor
Rehearsals: Saturdays, 9:00-10:45am
Tuition: $695
The Intermezzo Orchestra is primarily made up of young musicians in middle school and high school. Emphasis in Intermezzo Orchestra is on building orchestral playing skills and reading ability.


Audition Information 
Strings, Woodwinds and Brass

  • Solo Repertoire: Please prepare a solo piece that demonstrates your current ability.
  • Scales: Strings, Woodwinds and Brass:
  • Potential sight reading


Percussionists

  • Demonstrate the basic rudiments on the snare drum and ability to maintain a steady beat / pulse

  • Snare drum solo or etude at appropriate level for this orchestra

  • Mallet solo or etude (on timpani, xylophone or marimba) at appropriate level for this orchestra

  • Must know all major/minor scales, two octaves (xylo, marimba or vibes - we have these instruments on site)

  • You will be asked to tune the timpani


 
Symphony Orchestra
Dr. Emanuele Andrizzi, Music Director and Conductor

Rehearsals: Saturdays, 9:30-11:30am
Tuition: $745
A majority of Symphony Orchestra members are in high school, or are selected from advanced, mature middle school students. The Symphony Orchestra performs standard orchestral literature, generally not educational arrangements.

Audition Information 
Strings, Woodwinds and Brass

  • Solo Repertoire: Prepare two contrasting selections.  One should be more technical to demonstrate technical facility and the other should be slower and more lyrical to demonstrate musicality. Selections may include solo literature, etudes, or orchestral excerpts.

  • Potential sight reading


Percussionists

  • Demonstrate the basic rudiments on the snare drum, tuning timpani and have begun mallet work, including playing music written in treble clef.

  • Snare drum solo or etude at appropriate level for this orchestra

  • Mallet solo or etude (on timpani, xylophone or marimba) at appropriate level for this orchestra

  • Must know all major/minor scales, two octaves (xylo, marimba or vibes - we have these instruments on site)
  • You will be asked to tune the timpani
